Internship or Volunteer Placement at USICD's Office

Perennial Internship Opportunities

Students and recent graduates are generally always welcome to inquire about internship opportunities at USICD’s office even if we might not have a formally announced opening.  Roles and responsibilities for interns at our office can vary greatly depending on your education, training, background, and academic requirements (if applicable), as well as our particular needs at the time.   Volunteers who are not students or recent graduates are also welcome to inquire about providing ongoing volunteer assistance.

Although we cannot guarantee a placement to each prospective intern at a given time, we are generally open to proposed internship placements any time of the year, anywhere from 8 hours per week up to full time for the duration of the internship.  Depending on your situation we may be open to someone working fewer than 8 hours per week, especially if you might be able to assist for longer than a typical semester.

Internships at our organization are unpaid.  We strongly prefer for our interns to complete their work at our office in Washington, DC, but may sometimes be open to a remote internship in certain circumstances.  We are unable to assist interns from out of state with finding or paying for local housing in DC. 

When feasible, we prefer learning of your interest to complete an internship or volunteer placement well in advance to give us time to consider and plan. However, in exceptional circumstances, depending on availability and capacity, we may be able to consider last-minute inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Most of our interns have been graduate students or recent graduates with a bachelor’s degree.  However, we are open to hearing from advanced undergraduate students with outstanding skills and professionalism.  
  • Good skills with written English is usually preferred, though not a strict requisite.  
  • The best interns generally take initiative and are strong self-starters, but are also not hesitant to ask for guidance, clarification, or additional tasks when needed.
  • Many of our interns have been working toward or recently completed degrees in international development, international human rights, and various other related majors.  However, we are open to hearing from prospective interns in other fields and majors if we can identify appropriate tasks. Examples of possible alternate majors could include, but are not limited to, social work, disability studies, communications, public relations, marketing, writing, web design, etc.
  • If your degree or other background is not clearly internationally oriented, we will be interested in learning what makes you interested in working at an internationally-oriented organization.
  • We strongly encourage people who have personal experience with disability to consider applying. 

Examples of Possible Tasks

Actual tasks will depend on a range of factors including your skills and background; your learning and career development needs; your interests; and USICD’s needs. No one intern would do all tasks listed, but most interns would be asked to implement a range of different tasks over time. For interns with disabilities, we will work with you to identify and implement reasonable accommodations as needed and to the extent feasible. For example, interns unable to use a voice phone would be waived from answering the phone.  

  • Assist with designing or redesigning USICD’s website (preferably using Drupal)
  • Assist with writing and developing content for USICD’s website
  • Assist with or coordinate USICD’s newsletter
  • Assist with or coordinate USICD’s social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blog site)
  • Research and identify more disability-focused and disability-inclusive policies at major bilateral and multilateral donor agencies, add them to http://usicd.org/index.cfm/donor-agency-policies
  • Research and write technical assistance content geared for the practical needs of disabled people’s organizations in developing countries for the website http://globaldisabilityrightsnow.org
  • Using skills, training, or background in marketing, generate and implement ideas for publicizing and raising visibility
    • For USICD as an organization,
    • For our web resources (policy collection, disability citations from State Department human rights reports, etc.),
    • For our availability to provide training to international organizations
      • Disability inclusion throughout the project cycle in international development programming in developing countries
      • Cultivating a disability-inclusive workplace at international organizations
  • Administrative tasks such as answering the phone, responding to routine emails from the public, and other tasks as needed.

  • Attach your resume (in either Word or PDF format is fine)
  • Attach a brief writing sample (no more than two pages). If feasible, this could be something you wrote for a previous internship in the international development or disability rights field.  But if needed, this could be something you wrote for class. An excerpt from a longer document is acceptable.
  • Indicate in the body of your email:
    • The approximate dates or semester when you would be available for an internship;
    • Why an internship at our organization interests you, and, 
    • Why you think you would be well suited for us.
